What is HumHub?

The foundation for your own private social network

HumHub is an open-source platform for social networking and internal communication. Companies, clubs, teams and organizations can use it to run their own private social network – independent of public platforms such as Facebook or Instagram.

In so-called Spaces, members can communicate, publish posts, share files, organize events and collaborate. Our image gallery module adds a convenient way to organize photos by events and categories and view them together.

Why have a dedicated image gallery for HumHub?

Photos belong in your Space – not scattered across chat histories or external cloud albums.

Organized instead of photo chaos

Galleries can be organized by category and event date, making it easy for users to find the photos they are looking for.

Enjoy photos together

Individual photos can be liked and commented on. The lightbox makes it easy to browse and zoom through the images.

Built for larger photo collections

Photos can be uploaded via drag & drop or a button. Automatic batch processing helps avoid common server and PHP limits when handling many images.

Sound familiar?

After an event, photos are everywhere: in chats, on private phones, in cloud folders or as individual posts in the stream.

  • Photos from an event are difficult to find again
  • Large numbers of photos are awkward to display in the regular stream
  • Users have to click through many individual posts
  • New galleries should be ready before everyone is notified
  • Older events added later should not suddenly appear in the stream

The solution: a gallery directly in the Space

  • Modern photo grids with lightbox, zoom and navigation
  • Galleries with title, description, date and category
  • Prepare drafts and publish them with one click
  • Publication integrates with the stream and notifications
  • Add older galleries without a stream announcement

All features at a glance

Easy to use for regular users – with the tools Space admins need for clean and efficient management.

For all users
  • Browse and view image galleries in each Space
  • Filter by category (e.g. summer events, anniversaries, team)
  • Modern photo grid with lightbox view – arrow keys, click and zoom

  • Chronological sorting of galleries by event date
For admins
  • Create galleries with title, description, date and category
  • Drag & drop upload – including larger batches without typical server limits
  • Automatic image compression and thumbnail generation
  • HEIC image support with the PHP Imagick extension
  • Draft mode: prepare a gallery before making it visible to everyone
  • Publish with one click – creates a stream post and notification
  • Special case "Older gallery": add retrospectively without notification

  • Delete galleries and individual photos (with confirmation)
Technical integration

System requirements
  • HumHub 1.17 or newer

Like the module? ❤️

The module is free. If it saves you time or you simply want to say thank you, I appreciate a small voluntary contribution. No obligation – but a nice motivation for further development.

What would you like to give as a small developer thank-you?

The amounts are only suggestions. You decide whether and how much you would like to contribute.

Frequently asked questions

How much does the module cost?

The module is available as a free download. A voluntary donation is welcome but not required to use it.

How is the module installed?

Installation is done via FTP. No server console is required. Upload the module to your HumHub system and activate it through HumHub’s module management. You can then enable the module in the desired Spaces.

Can I upload many photos at once?

Yes. The module automatically processes larger uploads in batches. This helps avoid common server or PHP limits when handling many files.

Who is notified when a new gallery is published?

With a normal publication, the gallery is integrated into the activity stream and users are notified through HumHub and/or email according to the existing notification settings. For older galleries added retrospectively, the stream announcement and notification can be suppressed.

Can I customize the color scheme?

Yes. The module uses a neutral color scheme that can be customized via CSS to match your HumHub design.

Which HumHub versions are supported?

The module has been tested with HumHub 1.17 and 1.18. Since the like/comment function is deliberately independent of core module internals, it is designed to remain robust across HumHub updates.

Does the module support HEIC images?

Yes. The current version supports HEIC images if the PHP Imagick extension is installed and enabled on your server.

Can users download a complete gallery?

Yes. Users can download the complete contents of a gallery as a ZIP file.

Is support available?

I’m happy to answer questions by email at hallo@dk-it-service.de. Users who support the module with a donation can look forward to especially quick replies 😉

May I modify and redistribute the module?
